D23 Expo in Japan Offers Glimpse at AVATAR Renderings for Disney’s Animal Kingdom (Video Update)

Things have gotten off to a good start at the D23 Expo in Japan with an announcement by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs about AVATAR, which is coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort. While a presentation was made at the D23 Expo in Japan, Staggs also shared images for the AVATAR-themed land with Disney fans around the globe via the Disney Parks Blog.

The new land that is coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom will include a new ride where guests can soar over Pandora and fly like a Banshee. A boat ride will allow guests to float through Pandora under the beautiful balcony. The new area in Disney’s Animal Kingdom will be found between Africa and the Oasis. According to D23, it will “encompass and expand beyond the area currently known as Camp Minnie-Mickey.” These new AVATAR changes are being done with a partnership between Disney’s Imagineering with Joe Rohde and James Cameron with his Lightstorm Entertainment.

AVATAR won’t be the only thing being added to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. A new nighttime spectacular will be coming to the park as well. Staggs announced it saying, “as part of the largest expansion in the history of the park, we’ll be adding all-new entertainment experiences, including a new nighttime spectacular where live music, floating lanterns, water screens and swirling animal imagery all combine to bring a show to Discovery River that will delight our guests and truly cap off their day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The park will introduce more nighttime entertainment as well, including live performers on Discovery Island and a new nighttime version of the Kilimanjaro Safaris.

These new experiences are slated to be coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 2017.

Disney now owns Marvel, Lucas Films and PIXAR. They have enough material for their parks to last centuries. Why do they need to take on Avatar – a property they do not own? Or is Disney planning to buy the Avatar franchise as well?

    1. It wouldn’t surprise me. At some point James Cameron is going to be looking for a caretaker for his legacy as well.
