Marvel to Create Four Series for Netflix

Marvel will be creating 4 live-action series to be streamed on Netflix along with a Avengers style special event. These will all start appearing on the Netflix queue in 2015. The first series will focus on Daredevil followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. The culmination will be a streaming mini-series event where these heroes come together in The Defenders. It has not been announced how long the mini-series will last.

The Defenders has included many different superheroes through the years. Generally, the name goes to a group of outsider superheroes who tend to have their own agendas. They generally aren’t the best team players either. Generally the Hulk and Dr. Strange were the most consistent members of this group and it is unknown if they will be featured at all in these series.  The Defenders were usually pitted against supernatural or mystic threats. Generally they were viewed as flawed heroes. At this time it is unknown if the Hulk will appear in any of these series or the mini-series. It also is unknown if there will be any tie in with a future unannounced Hulk movie. However, anything is possible in the world of Marvel and it would make sense!

“This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel’s brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel’s specialty,” said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. “This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what’s sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.”

These new series will continue to expand upon the quickly growing Marvel universe for the worlds of television and movies. Marvel has basically redefined the superhero genre of entertainment as it continues to ambitiously create new live-action movies, television series, and now internet television series.

“Marvel’s movies, such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’ are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. “With ‘House of Cards’ and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and we’re thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.”

The deal between Netflix and Marvel (which is owned by Disney) continues to build on the distribution deal made last year by Netflix and Disney for U.S. subscription television service to exclusively show first-run, live action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios. This deal includes movies from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and also Lucasfilm. Looking at the slate of movies set to be released in the coming years from these studios, this is a big deal for Netflix. It will also continue to build internet television and Netflix as a viable option to traditional cable television.

So what do you think of the new Marvel live-action series that will be coming to Netflix? Are you excited?
