The following article I wrote for DAPs Magic News . If you agree with anything I have written, I encourage you to print this article and take it to City Hall. This really is an issue with safety ramifications for both Guests and Cast Members. Please share this with as many people as you can and help us get this changed. There were other instances not included in this article of the smoke causing discomfort and medical issues. Let's make a difference and help keep Disneyland a happy and safe place to visit! It only takes a few minutes and you can help make that difference! Thanks for your help! - Mr. DAPs
This year at Disneyland, HalloweenTime is full of pumpkins, candy, new fireworks, attraction layovers, villains, and cigarette smoke. Yes, that’s right, cigarette smoke. The powers-that-be have put the Disney villains this year in a character walk in front of it’s a small world. In previous years, this would be a wonderful location. The line for it’s a small world isn’t as prohibitive as it will be for Christmas, there is ample room to make a line for a character meet n’ greet, and there are even trees around to offer some respite from what has been scorching sun. The downside is what is right behind the small backdrops they have made for Disney’s villains.
Fantasyland’s smoking section is located several yards away, close enough that smoke regularly wafts into the character location. It is also close enough that guests could be heard complaining about it in the park on Sunday. It is even close enough that one Cast Member had to be removed from this location when the smoke caused this person to have an asthma attack.
This is a problem that needs to be addressed. Secondhand smoke has been proven to have detrimental effects. The Walt Disney Company has gone as far as to publicly denounce the practice of smoking in movies, “produced by the Company that carry the Disney brand” (“except in limited circumstances”) and they strongly discourage the use of smoking in other movies produced within the United States by Touchstone Pictures. It also discourages the use of smoking in other movies that are merely distributed by the Walt Disney Company. In 2006, the Disneyland Resort Hotels transitioned to a smoke free environment. A year later the Walt Disney World Resort Hotels did the same. Within the Disneyland Resort, smoking is relegated to specific smoking areas. However when the smoking areas and an attraction or queue end up sharing air, there is a safety and comfort issue for the majority of guests and cast members who are not smokers. According to the Center for Disease Control, “secondhand smoke contains at least 250 known toxic chemicals, including more than 50 that can cause cancer.” It also causes heart disease, lung cancer, respiratory infections and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDs).
Disney has four standards of quality that it operates under. The first, and the one that is never to be compromised is safety. This standard must be questioned at this location if there is at least one Cast Member being removed as a direct result of the nearby smoking section. Characters inherently attract children and families. While the argument could be made that people are only exposed to the smoke for a few minutes as they make their way through the Meet n’ Greet, it must be remembered that Cast Members and characters alike are standing there for much longer. Their safety must be considered as well. Disney has made great strides in past years in dealing with the smoking issue. This could have just been a case where the ramifications of the proximity of the characters to the smoking section weren’t thought through all the way. Now that a problem exists and has been recognized, it is time to fix it. Hopefully, this fix will come swiftly. The health of the Cast Members who work so hard daily to make magic for the families that visit must be vigorously protected so that Disneyland remains as healthy and safe as it is fun “for all who come to this happy place.”
DAPs Magic emailed the Disneyland Press Office but did not receive a response for comment on this story.
Last night I was joined with thousands of other excited guests for the unveiling of Disneyland’s newest fireworks spectacular, Halloween Screams. This is the first year that Disneyland has had a Halloween firework show and I must say it didn’t disappoint. The main character of the show was Jack Skellington, who was accompanied by his faithful dog Zero. Jack was projected onto a ball to the left of the castle. So were many other villains’ silhouettes. Zero flew around the castle, much like Dumbo did in Magical. Both were very effective and it is fun to see Disney bring new things to the original magic kingdom. The music was well done with newer sounding recordings that involved electric guitar a lot. There are definitely some similarities to Walt Disney World’s Hallowishes. The average guest will not know this though and even if they do, it is still an enjoyable show and is different enough to make it distinct. Firework shows at Disney (and other shows too for that matter) frequently bother from each other around the Disney universe it seems. The fireworks themselves were incredibly well choreographed. I found myself quite impressed with the choices made in this regard. The lighting that accompanied them was equally effective. One last thing that jumped out at me was during one portion of the show there is a scream along. I’m not sure if exciting, thrilling, or terrifying would be the word but when Jack told everyone to scream they most certainly did! I’m sure those screams will only build in volume as the season continues. So to end my thoughts on Halloween Screams, I’d have to say Disney has done a very good job in bringing Halloween into the skies above Sleeping Beauty Castle. And while I wasn’t blown away by Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy as I mentioned in a previous post, I do find myself wanting to experience it again so they must have done a fairly decent job there as well. If you can, meander over to Disneyland and check them out. Oh, and get a spot early where you can see the castle easily!
The rumors have been going around for a couple of weeks and now Brady MacDonald of the LA Times is reporting that this fall Halloweentime at the Disneyland Resort should have a few new things to add to their celebration of Halloween. There will be some additions to the multi orange colored decorations throughout the resort, the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay for Haunted Mansion, Woody’s Halloween Roundup, Mickey’s Trick or Treat Party, oh and the uptick in villains wandering around Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure.
Apparently Halloween will be celebrated in space in the future because Space Mountain (yep, that’s what I said) will be getting a Ghost Galaxy overlay. It will include a new soundtrack and new projections throughout the attraction. Secondly, the skies of the Disneyland Resort will not be lighting up with the new fireworks spectacular Magical, or the old one Remember…Dreams Come True. Instead, there will be a fireworks “spooktacular” haunting the skies above Sleeping Beauty Castle.
I think these are two steps forward as the Disneyland Resort continues to build Halloween as a yearly celebration. Each year the powers that be have tried to keep things moving forward with something new for Halloween and this year it seems we should get a pretty good haul While there will be no Golden Screams this year in Disney’s California Adventure, I’d pick Ghost Galaxy any day over that! I have to think this will help continue to draw crowds into the park and it will most definitely contribute to a very happy Halloweentime at the Disneyland Resort.
