Space Base 8There aren’t that many times we truly get to see the development of something great. How many people are able to say they were there during the beginning phases of Charlie Brown? Or perhaps Calvin and Hobbs? Or Garfield? I could come up with lots of different comic strips through the years that have started with a man with a dream, a piece of paper, and a pen or pencil. Even more have had the dream, have had the paper, and have had the pen yet have chosen for one reason or another not to pursue the dream.

David Scott Smith is one of these men who have chosen to pursue the dream. Armed with his paper, pen, and an incredible imagination Dave has created a new look at the future (or perhaps the past?) in space. He has developed an ambitiously broad range of characters to create quite the ensemble. What makes this even more impressive is that they all are interesting and worth getting to know. He has developed relationships through his story arcs that are very real and relatable. The reader can see things happen that have happened before and will happen again to people around the world, perhaps even the reader. At the same time, Dave makes each strip humorous with the ability to stand alone. This is a real talent and I can’t imagine the amount of work put into making this happen three times a week!

Space Base 8 - CargoThe look has undergone some changes since he began publishing Space Base 8 less than a year ago.  The characters have developed. The style of the animation has evolved.  New characters have been created. With most comics these things could often go unnoticed by the average person and a fan of the comic might enjoy taking note of this. Dave has made it easier for his fans though in a couple of ways. The first is in his blog, www.monkeyalwayswins.com where he talks about the development of Space Base 8 and anything that pops into his mind that could possibly relate to Space Base 8.  Another thing he has done is created what he is calling his Sketchbook on Space Base 8 itself. In it, you can see various sketches he has made through the development process. Check this part out to see various sketches of Cargo, Lighthouse, and Space Base 8 itself! I’d guess that Dave will put more up there in the future and I can’t wait!

If you haven’t checked out Space Base 8 yet, you need to. If you have NEVER looked at it before, I would suggest going to www.spacebase8.com and then clicking on the link that says FIRST right under the strip. Then you can follow Space Base 8’s storyline from its inception to today! I have really enjoyed getting to follow this strip and I hope you will too. Leave comments for Dave and show him some love! Let’s help his dream get bigger and better and perhaps someday you’ll be able to say that you were a fan way back when a little blog was highlighting Dave Scott Smith and a comic strip that would someday be hugely famous!

About Space Base 8:

Space Base 8 is a comic strip about monkeys, rocketships, robots, space aliens, and a space station called Space Base 8. It is created by David Scott Smith, who very much likes all of those things listed above. He likes you, too.

This comic strip used to appear on your interwebs five days a week, Monday through Friday. Then the cartoonist collapsed from exhaustion and since then this comic strip only appears three days a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Someday five days a week will happen again, don’t you know. So hold yer breath.

After months of hard work, sweat, and who knows maybe even tears, Space Base 8 is now online and available for all of us to enjoy. Creator, artist, and all around nice guy David Scott Smith began posting the incredible adventures of our favorite space monkey on June 1, 2009. I could tell you what they are but I’m not going to because then you don’t need to read the comic yourself (and I am not nearly as funny as Mr. Smith is). How do you check these out you ask? Well thank you for asking. Just head on over to www.spacebase8.com. There are new strips being posted every day so put this page in your favorites and check it out regularly. While you are checking it out regularly, leave him a comment in support as well! If you want to know about the making of Space Base 8 and get some background info go to www.monkeyalwayswins.com where David keeps his blog about all of this stuff. It is kind of like the extras on a DVD/BluRay and is definitely worth checking out!

Space Base 8 is the culmination of many years of dreaming and hard work by David Scott Smith. He has worked at the Disneyland Resort since 1995 designing and painting Artisan Watches in the Fortuosity Shop. However his art career has not been all Disney. He has also worked on children’s books for both Golden Books and Bumpy Slide Books. He has work that has been included in the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Exhibition in 2000 and also 2001. He has worked in theatrical scenic artist painting sets for live theater and has had paintings show up in posters and programs for the Golden State Theater.

POSTED BY MRDAPS AT 11:50 AM

Recently a good friend of mine told me about a project he has been working on, a webcomic. His comic, is in progress and will soon be available for all to see. In the mean time, he has developed a blog , Monkey Always Wins , to chronicle the experience of creating a webcomic. As he works through the development of this webcomic, he talks about his experiences as he works to create and develop characters, rework them, and then keep them consistent. He also shows the art in different points of development so the reader can see a strips origin and then the finished project. Dave is an incredibly entertaining person to talk to. He has a wide range of life experiences and from the glimpses I can see on Monkey Always Wins, this is going to be a comic worth following! Who knows, maybe it’ll become as big as Calvin and Hobbs or Peanuts and we’ll all be able to say “we knew him when.”

Oh, and the comic revolves around a monkey on Space Base 8. His style is wonderfully retro and the preview is hilarious! Just looking at the characters and artwork will make you smile. If/when artwork is ever sold from this webcomic, it definitely is worth trying to get and post in your game/entertainment room!
