muppetslimoAs you might have noticed on DAPs Disney News this morning, they are casting for The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made. Along with the opportunity to be a part of the next Muppet movie this release also gave a better look at what the movie will be about.

According to the release, The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made will  ”center on the The Muppets reunion, in order to save The Muppet Studio in Hollywood. They get everyone together in an adventure to defeat Tex Richman, an evil Hollywood man who wants their studio! Everyone must work together in order to save their beloved Muppet studio, and together with their human pal, Gary, they are sure to do so!

We can make a fairly educated guess that Gary will be played by Jason Segal. It will also be directed by Nicholas Stoller.  Ben Stiller and George Clooney are rumored to be working on The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made as well. The rest is up in the air. One draft of the screenplay indicated they’d like to have a lot of celebrity cameos including Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Christian Bale,  Steve Carrell,  Jack Black, Mel Brooks, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Rachel Ray, Bob Saget, Lisa Lampenelli, Jeff Ross, and Charles Grodin. I think it’d be a complete coup if they pulled all this off. Traditionally, the GREAT Muppet exploits had some really fun cameos throughout the years.

The release date for The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made is December 25, 2011. Filming will be this month (September) through November of this year as well.

I cannot wait for this movie! I think this will be the best Muppet movie since The Muppet Christmas Carol. So now as I wrap this up for today I have a couple of questions for you. What is your FAVORITE Muppet movie? What is your favorite Muppet? Do you think that they are on the right track with this movie?

Make it a GREAT day!

-Mr. DAPs

Muppets - Stars and Stripes Forever

What is more American than the Muppets when celebrating the 4th of July? Of course on this 4th of July the folks over at Muppet Studios have released another video for us to enjoy. And what could be more American than the Swedish Chef making popcorn shrimp right? The video was actually released on July 2nd but I'm coupling it with a more patriotic Muppet video. Hope you enjoy! Make it a GREAT day! -Mr. DAPs

Muppet MovieSo there hasn’t been NEARLY enough to report on regarding the newest Muppet movie entitled The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made. However, one of the writers did do an interview for another project he is working on and gave us a LITTLE bit of info. Nicholas Stoller is one of the writers for the newest Muppet flick. He shared his thoughts on The Muppets saying:

"If you watch The Muppet Movie now it's amazing how much they break the fourth wall and how Simpsons-esque it is, but obviously before The Simpsons. It's very self-aware and kind of amazing. I call The Muppets the gateway drug for all comedy nerds - it's what you see that makes you want to do comedy for the rest of your life."

I think he actually has a fairly good point. The Muppets really was a prelude for shows like The Simpsons. I think in recent years they have forgotten those roots in comedy and instead focused on being safe and for lack of a better description, Disney. Now this is no surprise as Disney does indeed own The Muppets. However, if you try to please everyone you end up pleasing no one. If this next movie is to be successful they need to get back to their roots. This means a grittier, less polished, more sarcastic portrayal of The Muppets. Look at the original Muppet Movie and see how real everything looks. This is quite possibly because they did go and film on location and not everything looks perfectly groomed like so often happens in newer Muppet flicks. The same definitely could be said of the comedy. Bring back the grittier comedy! Anyway, I will step off my soap box now. I actually have quite a bit of confidence in Jason Segal and Nicholas Stoller. I think they are comics that Jim Henson would choose to work with and I hope this ends up being a movie that points towards Jim Henson as opposed to Walt Disney. Both are great men but Walt had a mouse and Jim had a frog. Here’s hoping this movie has Kermit acting more like his old froggy self!

The folks over at Muppet Studios have released another youtube video. This time however it does not include any of the main Muppet characters that they have been using lately. Instead it has a monster singing Stand By Me. It is VERY reminiscent of sketches from the original Muppet Show. All it really needs is the laugh track and an introduction by Kermit. I hope they continue to create these videos. What do you think?

Muppet Cel - Hollywood Studios

This Saturday in the Animation Gallery in Hollywood Studios guests will have the opportunity to purchase the new hand painted Muppets ink and paint cel. Entitled The Wocka Wocka Room, this cel will only be available at the Walt Disney World Resort. Costa Alavezos, the artist, will be on hand on Saturday to sign the cels. There will also be ink and cel paint artists around as well on Saturday.

As I've looked at this piece of art, I notice some interesting little details. It is loaded with not so hidden Mickeys. The caption in the background is "The Magic of Disney Animation." I would assume it is there just because it is a cel and the folks over at Disney Animation are the ones who created the artwork. Could it mean something else though? I also liked the little nods towards various Disney characters in this aka Fozzy as Goofy and Rizzo as Mickey. If you decide you like it and find yourself at Walt Disney World on Saturday, more specifically in Hollywood Studios, than run over and get it.

One last thought, while I'm a bit disappointed that this isn't being released at the Disneyland Resort I like that one resort is getting something that the other isn't. I would love see this happen regularly... or even more so see this become the norm for all merchandise. With the new Walt Disney World/Disneyland annual pass I believe that Disney is going to have to come up with more unique merchandise for each sides of the country so people will be more inclined to shop on both sides of the country. I don't have any reason to think that they will do this but it sure would be great!

Beaker - the Muppets

The guys over at Muppet Studios are at it again. Beaker seems to be a new favorite as he is in many of these new videos on youtube. This one definitely has a new look for Beaker and while not my favorite that they have done, it is still humorous. Hope you enjoy it!

Muppets on Main Street - Disneyland USA

Yesterday I was able to catch the first performance by Kermit, Miss Piggy, Sweetums  their crew, and a bunch of honorary voluntEARS as they made their way up Main Street as a part of the pre-parade before Celebrate: A Street Party. They will be appearing this year to promote the Year of Volunteering where guests can volunteer for a day at an approved charity and gain admission to a Disney Theme Park.

It was a blast to see some of my favorite Muppets in person as I was not able to make it when they made an appearance at the D23 convention. While I didn't get to "meet" them, it was a good consolation prize. I would have LOVED to have seen Fozzy and Gonzo as well but I definitely am not complaining. My good buddy Andrew Lockerbie was so gracious to grab my camera and take pictures for DAPs Magic so that I could film them.

I thought they did a phenomenal job with the pre-parade float and it was my favorite version of it in recent memory. The music was a lot of fun and did a good job of bringing together the music from Celebrate and also The Muppets. The dialogue was appropriate for the show and the only thing I perhaps would have added was a little sarcasm towards Miss Piggy from Kermit reminiscent of the original The Muppet Show. That definitely is nit picking though and really hope that they continue to use The Muppets more in the future!

With that, I'll let you see the pictures and the video. Hope you enjoy!

The Muppet Show - Muppets Pre-Parade

Starting on Friday the Muppets will be leading the pre-parade before Celebrate: A Street Party daily as a part of the push to promote volunteerism this year. This also is a part of pushing the Muppets back into the spotlight. Hopefully this will help them become as popular as they once were during their heyday. Since The Walt Disney Purchased them in 2004, nothing huge has been done with the franchise. There have been some mediocre productions that were produced, a couple of gigantic characters could be found walking through some of the theme parks, and there has been some merchandise. It seems this mediocrity though is finally being turned into something more. We will see the Muppets parading through the park looking just as we’ve seen for years on The Muppet Show. This is also a prelude to the upcoming Muppet movie, The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made. It seems that finally Disney is putting effort in promoting Jim Henson’s Muppets and I can’t wait to see Kermit, Miss Piggy, and crew in the park and then later on the big screen!

And for those of you who can’t make it into the park to see the Muppet pre-parade, we’ll have a video up as soon as possible!
