Henry Watch ’06!
For the week of November 7, 2006 Bats Day came and went under Henry’s leaves. He watched as a wave of black swept down Main Street USA. He watched as they temporarily took over Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and then just as quickly disappeared. He was very thankful that there were no axes, or fire breathing dragon slayers that came through the day. Curiously, he observed two small potatoes walking down Main Street. One sported a black helmet and cape and the other a white helmet. What they were doing at Disneyland, Henry did not know. They seemed to get along with many of the Bats. As Bats Day moved further and further into the past, these two potatoes moved further and further back in his mind. Other things were more important now. Just yesterday he saw a new tree being brought to Main Street. This tree proudly displayed his coat of lights and bulbs, which brightened up Main Street USA’s Town Square. He also observed other decorations being put on the buildings and light posts on the street. He hoped that he would receive some fancy lights to be a part of the decorations for this special occasion. Christina would still stop by almost daily to give Henry his hug and one day while she visited he asked her about all these decorations. She explained they were for a holiday known as Christmas and that it was traditional for trees to be decorated with lights to celebrate.
After Christina left, Henry was deep in thought thinking about Christmas. He hoped he could be a Christmas Tree. He would proudly display his lights for all the little boys and girls to see and enjoy. Henry could see how this was such a popular time of year for Christina and her friends. Henry quietly enjoyed the breeze blowing through his leaves as he thought about Christmas. Suddenly his thoughts were interrupted by a voice demanding his attention. Henry looked right, left, up and then finally down where he realized that the voice belonged to that potato with the black helmet and cape!
This potato was demanding his allegiance to some empire. How could Henry do this he wondered? How could he betray the legacy of his predecessors on Main Street? Explaining this to this small potato, Henry realized that this potato was growing angry for his loyalty. He tried to appease this potato by telling him there is a tree farm a few miles away but that only steamed this potato even more. Suddenly the potato snapped and a bright blade came out and Henry felt pain in one of his branches. |
