Watcher Wednesday: Iron Man 3 Rumors

Hello everyone, Wizard Victor here again, filling in for Murray while he goes on fantastical endeavors. There’s been a lot said about what’s gonna happen in Iron Man 3, a lot of rumors swirling about involving certain new plotlines and villains. Because this movie is to take place after The Avengers, people have been hoping that there’s a larger sense of continuity in the later films and that it becomes more comic book-like.

Iron Man 3 is set after The Avengers and as a result, is the first standalone film in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yes, characters like Thor and Captain America will be mentioned but other than that, it is intended to be exclusively Tony Stark’s story and the things that happen to him. This will also be the very first Iron Man movie under the Walt Disney label and not Paramount Pictures. Does this mean Tony Stark will be watered-down? Not at all, Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau are still going to produce the film and it’ll likely remain the same.

You might’ve heard a lot about this movie adapting the Extremis story arc from the comics. For those who aren’t familiar with Extremis, it’s a significant story in Iron Man’s history that radically changes both his origin story and the character himself. Though elements of the origin story were put into the first Iron Man film, Iron Man 3 is going to adapt the concept of the Extremis armor. In the comic, Tony is injected with nano-technology that allows his body to store his armor in his bones. He can control it through his brain impulses and activate the armor at will. This armor is sleek, form-fitting, less bulky, and even more powerful than his previous armors now that he can control every command with just his thoughts.

Furthermore, Tony is enhanced with a certain variation of Captain America’s supersoldier serum that allows him to remotely connect to external communications systems and gives him a healing factor similar to Wolverine’s.

There has also been major uproar since photos from the set were released of a red-white-blue variation of the Iron Man armor. Many immediately thought this to be the character Iron Patriot, a hero-turned-villain in the comics. In the comics, Iron Patriot was Norman Osborn, best known as the Green Goblin in the Spider-Man comics. This wouldn’t be possible for the film because of certain Spider-Man character rights being owned by Sony, so many concluded the character Eric Savin would be Iron Patriot.

It was later rumored that this wasn’t Norman Osborn or Eric Savin, but Tony Stark’s friend Rhodey, who took on the mantle of War Machine in Iron Man 2. It’s since been concluded that this red-white-blue armor is a new version of the War Machine armor to better symbolize America’s weaponry.

Iron Man 3′s tentative release date will be next year on May 3, 2013. In the words of the immortal bard Lee: Excelsior!
