Song Saturday: Disney Style (We Are Here To Change The World)
Wednesday was the late Michael Jackson’s birthday. The King of Pop would have been 54 years old. You can call Michael Jackson many things, but a Disney hater he was not. In fact, Michael Jackson immersed himself in everything Disney, from reaching out to Ward Kimball to recreating Disneyland with Neverland Ranch. In 1986, he debuted a brand new 4D sci-fi film (the first of its kind) at the Disney theme parks. Directed by The Godfather’s Francis Ford Coppola, it was called Captain EO and its main song was We Are Here To Change The World.
In Captain EO, EO and his band of misfits go to a desolate scrap metal planet to deliver a gift to the Supreme Leader. Using the power of song and dance, they manage to fend off all the henchmen and deliver the gift to the evil Supreme Leader, turning her into Anjelica Huston and the planet into a beautiful Greek temple.
Although Captain EO is a little bit dated, it brings back many nostalgic memories for Disney theme park goers. The song, We Are Here To Change The World is a bit dated as well, but it’s a very memorable song, filled with all of Jackson’s trademark mannerisms, including his HEEs and HOOs! The dance routines are also very impressive and prove why he’s considered the King of Pop. He was one of a kind: an entertainer who could sing, dance, write songs, and act.
