Watcher Wednesday: SHIELD Show

20120904-222523.jpgIt has come out that Joss Whedon is producing a SHIELD television series for Marvel Studios. It may come as no surprise to some, but perhaps a bit of one to others. The questions that come across most minds are whether we will see many of the characters that have graced the silver screen in recent films, or if this will be entirely independent.

My assumption is that it will be fairly independent. I’m sure some allusions or examples will come about in the series, if it’s to be tied into films, but it doesn’t need to be. SHIELD and Nick Fury were fairly independent from other Marvel comics for quite a while. But, this may prove to be a problem and an asset. The problem is that Nick Fury is a main character in the stories that could come from comic series. He was the James Bond and Rambo of Marvel Comics. It’s hard to have that grandiose a presence absent from major stories.

But, SHIELD has had some interesting agents in its midst. Sharon Carter would be an interesting person to follow, and to also tie into the Captain America films. She has been an on again off again relationship with Steve Rogers, and a formidable agent. Another great character is Maria Hill, who was featured in the movie, but I have some reasons for including her. She eventually became the handler for the Avengers. She was a one woman army in recent comics stories. And, for consistency, it is possible that Colbie Smulders could reprise her role from the movie. I think this because How I Met Your Mother, her current television series, is nearing the end in maybe two seasons.

What I hope for most is stories about SHIELD’s arch nemesis – Hydra. This evil organization has always been the bane of SHIELD. And the movies don’t seem to be close to ever bringing this conflict into play. There were great agent/villains from the society. There were awesome battles. I could see this series focusing on the complexity of espionage and action with character conflicts in the midst of it all.

And, until next time, have a Marvel-ous day!
