Star Trek Into Darkness Super Bowl Commercial

startreksuperbowlcommercial

Those who watched the Super Bowl yesterday had the opportunity to see a new commercial for Star Trek Into Darkness. This new look at the newest Star Trek movie offers a few new clues as to what we will be seeing in this movie. I will warn you now. There might be a few spoilers in my analysis so… if you don’t want spoilers. Just watch the trailer. I won’t give away anything huge though.

Before we get into talking about it, let’s watch the trailer:

So what do you think?

I really liked this trailer! It was shorter than some of the previous teasers but it had some amazing tidbits in it. Alright, so lets take a look at what is to be gleaned from this trailer!

London

First off, there is a lot going on in London in this presentation. Right at the beginning you can see a variation of the UK flag. We also appear to get our first look at the destruction wrought upon Earth by John Harrison as we see what appears to be a future London be destroyed.

Kahn

Does this trailer offer more evidence that John Harrison is indeed Kahn? For those who believe that is what will eventually happen, there were a few clues that could be read that way. In this, John Harrison says “I am better” in response to Captain Kirk asking who he is. Kirk then asks “at what?” and Harrison responds “at everything.” Anyone who has ever observed Kahn knows that he likes to flaunt his superiority. So is this an indication that John Harrison and Kahn are the same man? Heck if I know! I personally would tend to doubt it still. There is an interview where Benedict Cumberbatch is quoted as saying in regards to the Kahn question, “I play a character called John and not that other name. It’s interesting. Speculation is speculation and that’s all fun.” It sure is fun to read all the speculation though. What do you think?

Enterprise

Will the Enterprise be destroyed in this movie? Is it one of the ships that get blown away when Harrison attacks the Federation? There are amazing shots of the Enterprise plummeting towards a planet, perhaps Earth, looking quite lifeless. Will this be the end of the original Enterprise? Will this lead to an NCC-1701 A in the next movie?  Or is this just Spock dreaming as is found in the Star Trek Countdown to Darkness comic book?

Destruction

Clearly this movie is going to have a LOT of destruction. As I sat here watching what I assume is Kirk and Uhura watching Harrison obliterate Klingons on Qo’noS, I’m reminded of The Empire Strikes Back from the Star Wars series. I know… bad to bring up Star Wars in a Star Trek post but sadly… this is going to happen more and more with J.J. Abrams taking on Star Wars VII. This appears to be the fall of the Federation and if I had to make a guess… we’ll see a glimmer of hope at the end of this… just like we saw in The Empire Strikes Back. Could I be wrong? Absolutely. However, seeing as this has been billed as a trilogy… I have a feeling that this is a fairly safe bet. Couple that with the title cards saying OUR WORLD WILL FALL… Need I say more?

Final Thoughts

I am predicting that this movie could go down as the best Star Trek movie that J.J. Abrams makes. The 2009 Star Trek had a few hurdles to overcome. This one will also but… everything I’m seeing is showing a story with a powerful story, an amazing villain, and incredible risk to the crew of the Enterprise. This one’s going to be good. What do you think? Let’s talk about it below!

Make it a GREAT day!
