Spooky Shorts- The Old Mill

Title

Welcome back boys and ghouls! Welcome to today’s Spooky Short (also the last one this year)! Today I am going to share a short that isn’t really Rainy Millone that someone might think of for Halloween. There is no real Halloween theme to it, but it is spooky in its own way. I’m talking about the 1937 Silly Symphony, The Old Mill.

The short features an old mill (hence the name) during a storm and all of the animals that take refuge in it. The music for it completely sets the mood and makes me thing of fall. There isn’t any dialog in the short or even any “action”. It is all about ambiance and how the animals react Lightning Miceto the storm. While not overly scary there is a slightly scary tone to it (it used to scare me a bit as a child).

It also should be noted that The Old Mill also marked the first use of the multiplane camera. Many of the effects and techniques learned and created for this short were used in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. You can watch this amazing short below. I hope everyone enjoyed this Spooky Short and the previous ones this month! I had a blast writing them and I am excited to see what next year will bring! I hope everyone has a great Halloween!

Have a Magical Day!

  1. I’m glad you wrote about this short! It’s a masterpiece. The animators did an amazing job making the simpleness of it be so spooky!

    1. The score of it is also amazing!
