UNCLE DEADLY, SCOOTER, KERMIT THE FROG

Kermit and the gang are back for the second episode of The Muppets. This episode had a lot more of the feel one would come to expect with the Muppets, moved the overall story along a bit more, and had some extra side stories going on that were quite enjoyable.

Review

Kermit the Fixer

Kermit the Frog was much more the Kermit that we are accustomed to. In the last episode, he came off as lonely and almost a bit of a jerk. This episode, he was back to being Kermit the fixer. He is the frog that wants to make things work and is determined to succeed. This is much more enjoyable to watch than his much more negative self last week. And seeing him get creative as he attempted to achieve his goals and beat Josh Groban was really quite humorous.

Miss Piggy and Josh Groban

Perhaps an unlikely couple but thanks to Kermit, Miss Piggy and Josh Groban go to the People’s Choice Awards and then find romance. The romance was surprisingly believable and entertaining. It also was exactly what this episode needed and played out wonderfully. After all, who isn’t impacted by a relationship one way or another?

Fozzie and Jay Leno

The Fozzie and Jay Leno storyline was perhaps my favorite part of this episode. Fozzie idolizes Jay Leno and Leno treats Fozzie as a respected colleague. Of course there is conflict thanks to Fozzie but… it all played out quite humorously and created a fun side story and a great guest role for Jay Leno.

Bobo the Bear vs. Muppet Newsman

The conflict between Bobo the Bear and the Muppet Newsman was really quite enjoyable… because it was over cookies and sweets. Bobo was selling them so his daughter could win a bike. The Newsman was competing to be better than his ex-wife. This wasn’t a huge part of the episode but it was a welcome addition to the show. It was also fun to see the Newsman being utilized in a storyline beyond just reading the news. I would like to see a continuation of this rivalry in the future.

Final Thoughts

Hostile Makeover was a much more enjoyable episode than Pig Girls Don’t Cry. First off, it had a more positive and less jaded feel to it which was very welcome. The characters seemed to be acting more like the Muppets we have come to know and love through the years. The Muppets definitely still had some adult gags happening throughout but they were much more tame this week. The various stories being told throughout the episode were enjoyable and in a way harkened back to the original Muppet Show as the episodes would hop around a bit. Kermit as Kermit again and Miss Piggy was definitely Miss Piggy which was a relief after some of the questionable choices in personality last week. It was also good to have the Muppets be the comedic stars of the show. The only thing I really was left wondering was… where’d Fozzie’s girlfriend go? I’m sure that will be addressed in a future episode though.

It will be interesting to see where the show moves in the future. I’m finding that for the most part I am enjoying the backstage and off stage scenes better than the actual Up Late with Miss Piggy scenes. If this episode is any indicator, I think the cameos will be fitting and fun. The pilot the guests really were more like the Muppets than the Muppets were. So all that being said, if this show can build momentum off of this week’s episode we are in for some fun!

What did you think of this week’s episode?
