Keira Knightley is the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. In this new adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, she plays a very pink version of this character. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms stars Morgan Freeman, Mackenzie Foy, Helen Mirren, and of course Knightley. The movie will be released before the holidays next year. Disney released a first look through Entertainment Weekly.
In The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Clara (Mackenzie Foy) is whisked away to a magical world that includes the Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers, and Land of Sweets. There, she is goes on a quest for a key to unlock a present from her mother. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Foy explained that Clara really is a brainy girl. “She’s very smart and independent,” Foy said. “She loves to think and find the fastest way to solve a problem.” Foy also shared about Clara’s relationship with the benevolent Sugar Plum Fairy saying, “Clara is just fascinated with her.”
Entertainment Weekly also released a picture of Foy’s Clara with the picture of Keira Knightley.
The first three realms mentioned above are fanciful and beautiful. The fourth realm is a little more foreboding. The Fourth Realm is ruled by Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren). “She’s a fierce character,” Mirren says, “with a modern edge.” However it isn’t a completely modern retelling of The Nutcracker. There will be nods to the original Tchaikovsky score and also a ballet with Misty Copeland included in the film.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is already in post-production. Due to the seasonal nature of this film, it will hold off on being released until the holiday season in 2018.
