“This afternoon, as Festival of Fantasy parade made its way through Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, one of the floats made a disastrous stop. As Maleficent made her way to Liberty Square, she quickly went from shooting fire during her duel with Prince Phillip, to quickly catching on fire herself and burning until Cast Members could come to the rescue.
The ordeal seemed to be handled quickly, as the fire was put out before Reedy Creek fire department got to the scene, but many guests were left frightened and confused after it float was extinguished and pushed backstage. User hg716 on Reddit said “In MK today, watching the parade near the barber shop. We noticed the Maleficent float was missing and that they closed off a portion of (or all of?) Liberty Square and Haunted Mansion. Very sad to see why.” When another user questioned how much of Festival of Fantasy made it through the rest of Magic Kingdom, hg716 responded “The rest of the parade came by, but ended with Merida’s float. Only found out anything was wrong after the parade ended.”
Disney officials are still investigating what caused the malfunction but the most important element is that all cast member and guests have made it away from the parade safely, even if the float may not have.
Festival of Fantasy parade debuted in March 2014 and was a celebration of the stories that live in the New Fantasyland area of the park. The parade has been running for four years without any notable incidents, and will hopefully be back to dreaming, glowing, and dazzling brilliantly soon!
