The cast for Star Wars: Episode IX has been announced ahead of production beginning on August 1st. The movie, being directed by J.J. Abrams will see the return of multiple characters. This includes the newer cast that has come to the new trilogy. There also will be familiar, and perhaps unexpected, faces coming to the film.

Carrie Fisher will be returning to this film. J.J. Abrams asked her daughter for permission and they will be using extra footage from the filming of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Mark Hamill will also be returning. Billy Dee Williams will be joining the cast to reprise the role of Lando As is the tradition, Anthony Daniels will be also returning to the cast.

We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” says Abrams. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.

Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd will be returning as the new generation of Star Wars cast members. They will be joined by Naomi Ackie, Keri Russell, and Richard E. Grant.

Production for Star Wars: Episode IX will begin on August 1, 2018. It will come to theaters on December 2019.
