Disney Streaming Service Gets Their Head in the Game for High School Musical with Joshua Basset

The newest incarnation of High School Musical has found its lead. This newest version will be a series made for Disney Streaming Service. Disney has cast Joshua Basset as the lead for it.

Joshua Basset will play a character named Ricky. Ricky is a cynical high school junior who is also incredibly charming. He also has a plan to win back his ex-girlfriend Nini. The plan? Audition for High School Musical of course and then star opposite of her.

“As someone whose childhood was shaped by the cultural phenomenon that is ‘High School Musical,’ I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to tell this story. Go Wildcats!” Bassett said.

“Joshua’s interpretation of the Ricky character was brilliant – funny, winning and, at the same time, uniquely vulnerable,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide. “The audience is going to love watching this charismatic young actor put his stamp on this next chapter of the ‘High School Musical’ franchise.”

Basset is 17 years old and is an actor, singer, and guitar player. He has appeared in over 30 musicals. He also has done commercials and appeared in some Disney Channel programming. He had a recurring role in Disney Channel’s Stuck in the Middle and also a guest starring role in the upcoming Dirty John for Bravo.  He will join the cast when they film in Salt Lake City, Utah.

High School Musical will be a 10-episode series about a group of high schoolers who stage a performance of High School Musical. During the process, they learn that there is as much drama off stage as on. Each episode will include a new version of a classic High School Musical song along with an original tune.
