A new gorilla has been born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort. The new baby gorilla is named Grace after the GRACE gorilla sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The sanctuary is dedicated to helping gorillas orphaned by poaching. Grace was born on May 1, 2019.
The birth of Grace is more than just a joyous occasion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. It is also an important part of the future existence of the species. Grace is a female western lowland gorilla. This is a critically endangered species that faces extinction due to hunting and loss of habitat. It is hoped that this can be a part of saving the breed. Graces parents Kashata and father Gino, were selected to breed as part of the Species Survival Plan overseen by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
