Captain Marvel – Home Entertainment Review by Mr. DAPs

By now we all know the Avengers who Nick Fury pulled together to protect humanity from threats they couldn’t fight on their own. What hasn’t been known is where that idea came from. In Captain Marvel, the story behind where Captain Marvel is told… along with how Nick Fury came up with the Avengers. Captain Marvel takes place in 1995 and finds a Kree warrior finding herself facing what she thought were dreams that now have more truth to them. With the help of Nick Fury, she not only discovers the truth about her past but also discovers how she can become a true galactic hero!

Quality

Captain Marvel is a movie that is a lot of fun to watch as the look, feel, and icons of 1995 are recreated. A part of this is taking characters that are in the current timeline and de-aging them by twenty or more years. This can be a challenge and isn’t always pulled off successfully. Thankfully, in Captain Marvel, the special effects team do a masterful job. The result is a movie that recreates the feel of the ’90s, looks awesome, and adds quite a bit of depth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It really looks great, it sounds great, and is just an enjoyable viewing and listening experience!

Extras

The bonus features included with Captain Marvel were enjoyable to review. It made for a nice afternoon learning more about what into the making of the film. This film really does continue to push the Marvel Cinematic Universe forward while also add to its original foundation. Watching the bonus features it was clearly evident to see that it was a bit of a passion project that also had a lot of fun mixed in. I found myself really enjoying the Featurettes (other than a couple of clips that I thought they used too often) and also the deleted scenes. While I could see why they weren’t used, they were fun to watch as they did add a bit to the story. Really the only bonus feature I didn’t care for was the “gag reel.” It is very rare that I enjoy those though so it didn’t come as a huge surprise. I’m a bit of a nerd and like the features that I learn things from rather than just the goofing off and mistakes that come with a gag reel. Overall, this is a decent compilation of extras and I will probably go back and watch them again.

Final Thoughts

Captain Marvel is a movie that I actually found myself enjoying more the second time I watched it than the first. I caught a lot of details and nods to other parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe the second time I watched it that I missed originally. Brie Larson is wonderful in the title role. I really like seeing the younger versions of Fury and Coulson. The supporting cast all make sense and have a reason for being in the movie. All this to say, it’s a solid movie that I really enjoyed. The accompanying bonus featured fit with the movie and added depth to it as well. Also, watching it in the context of now having seen Avengers: Endgame actually added to the film as well. I will probably want to watch both Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel again once both movies are available for home entertainment viewing. I definitely would suggest getting this for your home entertainment library. It is a must-see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I can’t wait to see what adventures Captain Marvel has in the future!
